England 1832, and the scientific revolution of the post-Roman Imperium is well under way. Average life expectancy is four centuries, and the Grand Families of Europe preside over an era of economic prosperity. Wars are history, and crime is almost non-existent. Almost.

For Edward Buchanan Raleigh, newly-qualified family representative, the theory of ultimate crime has suddenly become reality. A murder has been committed. The first time a member of the powerful Raleigh family has been killed for over two decades.

Edward is handed the case of dead student which baffles both the police and more experienced family members. There is apparently no motive. The victim has no enemies, only a group of friends who adored him.

It's a problem that any normal person would quietly assign to the inactive files after the fuss has died down. But Edward is intrigued by the murder, and refuses to let it go. As the centuries pass and new technologies become available to him, he pursues the killer through the solar system and out to the stars.
