SYNOPSIS

In a major publishing event certain to be lauded by aficionados of the ghost story everywhere, Centipede Press is proud to announce the publication of Susan Hill’s modern classic, The Woman in Black. Rightly praised as s worthy successor to the mantle of M.R. James, for over five decades the horror and mystery fiction of Susan Hill has garnered some of the most coveted of literary awards including the Somerset Maugham Award and the Whitbread Novel Award.

Since her debut at age fifteen with the publication of The Enclosure, a stunning work criticized by some for its sexual overtones (which a prudish press thought “unsuitable for a schoolgirl”), Hill has continued to push boundaries while remaining true in spirit to her inspirations. Her 1970 melodrama I’m the King of the Castle was but the first of many award-winners.

The Woman in Black is considered by many to be her literary masterpiece and has been adapted to both film and the stage, the stage play has run consistently in London’s West End for over twenty years. The first edition of The Woman in Black published by Hamish Hamilton in 1983 now commands prices of several hundred dollars. Now, on its thirty-fifth anniversary, we present a newly illustrated edition with cover artwork by the incomparable Simon Prades and interior illustrations and introduction by the multi-talented Reggie Oliver. This is truly a book that will serve as a centerpiece to any serious collection of the modern ghost story and a companion volume of sorts to our forthcoming edition of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and our previous publications by Charles L. Grant and Ramsey Campbell.
