Lovecraft, H[oward] P[hillips]. THE SHUNNED HOUSE. Athol, Mass. Published by Paul Cook The Recluse Press, 1928. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-58 [59] [60: blank], unbound sheets in eight uncut signatures. First edition. Lovecraft's first book of fiction. 300 copies were printed but the book was not published. A few copies were circulated among members of the tiny Lovecraft circle prior to August Derleth's acquisition of approximately 150 useable sets of sheets from Robert Barlow, Lovecraft's literary executor. The original 1928 Cook copyright statement is canceled with an Arkham House copyright label as pictured below, the original copyright can be seen when you hold the page up to the light, presumably this is one of about fifty sets of unbound sheets Derleth distributed prior to 1961 before binding 100 copies in the black cloth uniform with other Arkham House bindings.

The top right corner was bent in the envelope, again as shown in the pictures above, and the set contains the orignial shipping envelope from Arkham House postmarked on September 29th, 1961.

L.W. Curry State(c)(1) of approximately 50 unbound sheets with state (a) cancellation "book and magazine title set in bold face"
