THE TEXT
Stigmata is an eclectic combination of short fiction, essays, poetry, prose poems, film scholarship, art and wood engravings.
It features essays on vampire files from Lane Roth and Robin Wood as well as an excellent dissection of the cold war philosophy as portrayed in science fiction films in Susan Sontag's masterful essay. Each essay is illustrated with stills from the films. Long out of print, the exxay by Henry Miller, "The Staff of Life," gives his reasons why you cannot find good bread in America. James Baldwin discusses American ex-patriets in his essay "The New Lost Generation," while in "Nabuti: Warm Welcome to a U.N. Committee," Patricia Highsmith details, in progressive horrific detail, what happens in a fictional African country. More stories, from Cynthia Asquith, John Collier, Sutton Breiding, Thomas Wiloch, and others abound.
THE ART
The showcase of this book is the Nyctalope-era art of Harry O. Morris and Dennis Tiani, whose photo-collages and delicate pen and ink work, respectively, reach glorious perfection in these pages. Of also interest are two masters of the woodcut: Fritz Eichenberg and Lynd Ward who are given over 25 pages of finely textured wood engravings.
